Jakob Gautel – born in Karlsruhe, Germany – is a Paris-based artist known for his innovative approach to public art and audience engagement. His diverse practice encompasses photography, video, installation, and performance, exploring the interplay between reality and fiction. Gautel’s work often seeks to redefine the artist-audience relationship through interventions in urban spaces and thought-provoking installations. He has participated in numerous international biennials, including those in Limerick, Yokohama, and Thessaloniki, and has created significant public art projects, such as installations in Paris that challenge contemporary notions of space and work. Recent artistic research projects include an exploration of Bauhaus heritage through his grandparents’ stories, and Justice(s), a photographic series that examines the concept of justice through diverse participant portraits. Gautel prioritises the production of meaning over objects, making a lasting impact in the art community. He teaches at ENSAPLV, where he shares his insights on Body and Space and Public Art.
