Born in Adana (Cilicia) and raised in Çanakkale (Dardanelles), Helin Boztepe’s upbringing was steeped in rich historical, cultural, and natural layers, from Troy to Assos and from the Hellespont to Mount Ida. After graduating from the Plastic Arts Department of Fine Arts High School in Çanakkale, Boztepe studied VAV Moving Images at Gerrit Rietveld Academie and is currently based in Amsterdam. Her audio-visual work spans multiple disciplines, exploring the concept of memory as it relates to space, subjects, objects, and individuals. The visual language embodies a sensitive poetic style, integrating optical, vocalic, and textual materials. Inspiration is drawn from mythological, philosophical, historical, and contemporary elements, alluding to themes of timelessness and eternity within the physical environment. Boztepe’s artistic practice incorporates writings, poems, and song lyrics, aiming to create immersive atmospheres that transport viewers to alternate places and states of mind. In today’s world, where the distinctions between fiction, non-fiction, truth, and reality are increasingly blurred, her work delves into these nuances. The audiovisual pieces feature a unique visual alphabet crafted from atmospheric shots and images, reconfiguring found, existing, or new materials to construct a surreal language rooted in memory, history, and the subconscious.
