Himangshu Sarma is an artist from Nalbari, Assam, currently residing and practising in Santiniketan. He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2021 and his Master of Fine Arts in 2023 from the Department of Sculpture at Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati. His research and practice focus on the cultural and material elements of survival among the riverine tribes of Assam, documenting various modes of recreation within the existential context of the riverine landscapes. Sarma’s approach emphasises collective engagement and learning, which significantly informs his work. By incorporating multiple disciplines, he aims to further explore interdisciplinary methods while preserving culture through his art. Alongside fellow practitioners Rabiul Khan, Ritushree Mondal, and Surajit Mudi, he is in the process of establishing GABAA, an artist-led centre in Santiniketan. This independent space will facilitate interdisciplinary and research-based engagements, fostering collaborative art practices that explore alternative methodologies for community conversations, archiving, and creation.
