Kanthar Ghar

“কাঁথার ঘর - Kanthar Ghar” is a project initiated by GABAA in collaboration with the women kantha makers of Birbhum. Through this project GABAA intends to initiate the making of a pedagogical site through connecting the learnings from history and local narrations. The layers of making Kantha portray the layered processes of making a house into a home by homemakers. And domestic learning as the first institution, where humans themselves can be identified as books, the gestures of kantha making transforms into a site for active conversations. Kanthar Ghar will be a construction of a third layer portraying the Autobiographies of the homemakers on the kanthas made by themselves, where GABAA poses the criticalities and understandings of community based practices in present times.

Kanthar Ghar

In this exhibition, threads of cloth and memory intertwine to tell stories too often overlooked. This project doesn’t turn its gaze towards professional artisans but instead towards the homemakers of Birbhum. They are not trained weavers or embroiderers by trade..
