Shuvaprasanna is a prominent contemporary artist, known for works that reflect the urban milieu, the turbulence and also vitality of the city he so loves - Kolkata. He is a founding member of the Calcutta Painters group, and has worked across mediums, including painting, etching and mixed media. His art, often centred on themes of decay and fragmentation, features striking symbols of angst amidst the city’s complex urban environment. His work is significant in capturing the turmoil of the 60s and 70s in Kolkata, the impact on its very soul. In 1984, he founded Arts Acre, an artists’ village in Kolkata, to foster a creative community, which soon transformed into a major cultural institution. Arts Acre continues to support emerging artists with workshops and residencies. Shuvaprasanna has received numerous accolades, including from the Birla Academy of Art and Culture and the Lalit Kala Akademi. He remains committed to the vision of his home-city, one of contradictions, suffering and beauty, an eternal, inspiring muse.
Shuvaprasanna’s art delves deeply into Bengal’s historical, cultural, and emotional landscapes, interlacing themes of suffering, resilience, and the fragile interplay between reality and perception. This representative show captures his decades-long artistic journey, where his works become deeply introspective meditations on the human condition, often through the lens of illusion and ambiguity.(..)
