Ritushree Mondal

Ritushree Mondal is an artist based in Santiniketan. Her work is deeply informed by her surroundings and nature, reflecting a conscious way of living that permeates her artistic practice. Mondal engages with natural elements and explores the dialogues presented by their organic transformations, and she is working towards creating an archive. Currently, her focus lies in archival study and alternative methodologies through research, gestures, and daily observations. She is part of GABAA, a collaborative initiative with fellow practitioners Himangshu Sarma, Rabiul Khan, and Surajit Mudi, aimed at fostering conversations that transcend conventional understandings of art. This space seeks to cultivate new language and dialogues around processes of making and learning.

Mondal identifies as an active practitioner dedicated to questioning and forming collaborative situations, nurturing a collective approach that deepens the understanding of individual practices in relation to contemporary contexts. She has also worked as an artist on the documentary Shakila - the Collage of Struggles, produced by the Film Division of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. Additionally, she received the Arthshila Curatorial Fellowship in 2024 as part of GABAA.

In this exhibition, threads of cloth and memory intertwine to tell stories too often overlooked. This project doesn’t turn its gaze towards professional artisans but instead towards the homemakers of Birbhum. They are not trained weavers or embroiderers by trade; they are mothers, daughters, and wives, sewing in quiet domestic spaces for their families. Historically, these women created kanthas not for sale but for their own use, stitching warmth and care into everyday objects. This project is more than an exploration of ‘craft’. (..)
